Mining and processing of aggregates. Concrete production
Nuova Demi’s origins date back to World War II, when, along the river Brembo, forefather Eligio Doneda started a small quarry to provide aggregates for the construction workers in the area. However, since 1951, and for the following two decades, the company grew its organization and production, and in 1984, was named Nuova Demi, as incorporated other companies acquired in the meantime.
From the quarry to the yard, from the quarry to the environment
Since 1951 Nuova Demi with its sand, gravel and concrete, has contributed to the development and progress of Bergamo’s urban planning. The secret of this success is the driving force of the close-knit family core, always cohesive at every stage of the company’s growth. Today Nuova Demi can count on two aggregates production units , at Zanica and at Brembate, and on the veins located in the provinces of Bergamo, Milan and Cremona. With its modern and fully automated plants, Nuova Demi produces more than fifteen different aggregate fractions, of which eight are natural and seven from subsequent crushing. A part of the natural aggregates is used to produce prepackaged concrete, in the plants at Zanica, Bagnatica, Brembate and Soncino (CR). The rest of the production used for prefabrication, production of asphalt, premixed mortars and for the construction industry in general. The aggregates it produces comply with the highest level of certification, and Nuova Demi has access to a materials research and certification center through a subsidiary, for the materials used to produce concrete mixtures. The laboratory is also responsible for controlling the characteristics of fresh and hardened concrete, carries out tests for the CE certification of aggregates, manages the FPC (Factory Production Control) certification for the concrete plants and issues certifications for reinforced concrete testing. The company also has a facility for storage and treatment of demolition materials, a responsible way to propose materials that are alternatives to natural resources. Nuova Demi can claim a mark of distinction and merit for integrating social and environmentally sustainable development into its business, by always implementing environmental restoration that exceeds regulatory requirements, capable of returning previously mined areas to a new vocation and utility, through an exemplary environmental restoration. This integration has further materialized with the construction at the vast Brembate area of a 900 kWh photovoltaic system that will almost entirely cover the electricity needs of the Brembate production facilities, continuing with the construction of a 998 kWh bio-mass plant, bringing the company to meet 86% of its energy needs. The Nuova Demi’s commitment shows that the diffusion of a culture of alternative energy and attention to environmental issues is possible and due also in the industrial sector.
